Vein Removal Q & A
Who is a candidate for laser vein removal?
Laser vein removal erases the blue-purple veins that show through your skin and can make you feel self-conscious. These veins may appear on your face or legs, marking your complexion and making it hard to don a pair of shorts with confidence.
Most veins, ranging from tiny spider veins to deep blue reticular veins, are candidates. All skin tones are eligible for the treatment. If you’re not sure you’re a candidate, schedule a consultation with Dr. Edwards to find out the best course of treatment.
How does laser vein removal work?
The CoolGlide Xeo laser combines the ideal laser wavelength with flexible parameters to deliver energy that treats a broad range of blood vessels.
During treatment, the laser system delivers pulses of light energy that causes your blood within the vein to coagulate. This eventually destroys the blood vessels so they are then reabsorbed by your body.
How many laser vein-removal sessions will I need?
The exact number of sessions you’ll need depends on your particular veins and skin type. For many patients, just one or two treatments is effective in fading unwanted veins. Most veins fade away within 2-6 weeks of treatment.
Does laser vein removal hurt?
Most patients feel a slight stinging as the laser energy is delivered to treatment sites. The sessions are tolerated quite well, however, without numbing cream or anesthesia.
What other types of skin lesions can be treated with laser energy?
Dr. Edwards uses Cutera CoolGlide Xeo Laser to address other problematic skin lesions. These include:
- Blood blisters or hemangiomas
- Port wine stains
- Vascular lesions
Discuss your skin concerns with Dr. Edwards and he can help you determine if laser treatment is right for you.
Do I need to schedule downtime following laser vein removal?
You can resume most normal activities right after a laser vein-removal session. Patients should wear sunscreen in any treated areas that are exposed to the sun. Without sunscreen, you may develop permanent discoloration at the sites of the veins.
You may experience some redness or bruising as a result of treatment. These fade in a short time, but larger veins may leave a tan or browning discoloration for a few weeks or months before completely fading away.
